Algae problems have plagued aquarium hobbyist since the hobby began, but as the hobby becomes more and more popular and technology gets better these problems become easier to solve. Of course prefect water conditions solve many of the problems but that can be sometimes difficult in the begining of an new saltwater aquarium. Many times a little help is needed to get over the beginning trials of the new and unestablished marine aquarium. Many times new hobbyist get discouraged and give up before the tank becomes mature and the algae problems fix themselves.
Many times changes need to be made to the set up of the aquarium to help solve the problem. As a rule canister filters do not provide enough water movement or filtration to the marine aquarium and lack the oxygen levels or flow to prevent algae problems even if the canister filter is rated for a much large aquarium. A well run marine aquarium should filter or turn the water 7 to 10 times per hour. Algae and red slime thrive in low flow dead zones in the aquarium and spread from there.Old light bulbs , high nitrates and high phosphates will fuel the problem.
Ok so now you fix the problems but the algae is still out of control what can I use to get the algae under control?
Below are a few products that work very well and will help to get the aquarium back to the way you want it to be and help keep it there.
Algaefix marine is a new product that works very well to fight green hair algae, brown diatom algae and in some cases red slime algae. My customers have given me rave reviews on the way this product works!

Algone and Reef Aquariums
Corals and invertebrates come from environments that are extremely low in nitrates.

Accumulating nitrates will affect the appearance and liveliness at levels that may not effect fish, or affect them at a lesser degree.

High nitrate levels in reef aquariums indicate low water quality. High nitrate formation increases the chances for bacterial diseases such as the brown jelly disease.

Corals will thrive best if nitrates are kept below 5 ppm. Higher nitrates will result in a loss of color, shortened live span, feeding deficiencies, and will negatively impact their ability to interact with their environment. The result is that unwanted micro algae are able to compete for nutrients with the coralline algae.

Use of Algone will not deprive coralline algae of needed nutrients, because Algone treats the water for nitrogen compounds, and does not have any influence on trace elements (especially calcium) needed by the coralline algae.

Low nitrate levels will not only ensure the proper growth of coralline algae, but also of the symbiotic algae that lives inside the corals and invertebrates. Symbiotic algae provide nutrients to the host, allowing them to exist in low nutrient areas found at natural reefs. Corals can not survive without the symbiont, as they are not able to derive enough nutrients from the water.

Nutrient control is therefore essential. Competing micro-algae can be a challenge and a threat for the sensitive reef environment.

Algone will not pose any harm to live rock, corals or inverts. Algone is 100% reef safe.

Always remember to stock enough livestock to help with algae control . Hermit crabs, snails, and algae eating fish all help to keep a natural control over algae growth, but sometimes have a difficult time putting algae in check if they can't keep up an over growth. once algae growth is reduced to a normal amount livestock should be able to any algae blooms at bay
Dr. G's Red Slime Controller will help reduce (and may eradicate) Red Slime algae/Cyano Bacteria. Will not effect the biological filter (nitrosomas, nitrobacter) or Coral Zooxanthele. Product works best in systems equipped with a good protein skimmer.
