The filter is the most important piece of equipment that you will buy for your aquarium. The success of your aquarium will depend on it. Poor filtration will result in fish loss, increased tank maintenance, unwanted algae growth and poor water quality in general.  A marine tank should be filtered 7 to 10 times per hour

this means that if you have a 55 gallon tank  you will want a filter that does between 400 and 500 gallon per hour.  Choosing the correct filter size and type can be confusing at best,with all the options available, some are better for one type of tank and not good for another.
